The Ultimate Guide to Remote Screen Share Testing

What is Screen Share Testing?

Screen share testing (also known as unmoderated usability testing) involves recording a user's screen and microphone as they attempt to complete tasks on your website or app.

Unlike a live interview, the user is guided by prompts on the screen. They speak their thoughts aloud ("Think Aloud Protocol") while they work.

It is the single most effective way to find usability bugs and friction points in your UX.

When to Use It

  • New Feature Launch: Before shipping that new checkout flow, watch 5 people try to buy something.
  • Navigation Redesign: Can users actually find the "Settings" page?
  • Competitor Analysis: Ask users to perform a task on a competitor's site and see what they like/dislike.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Define Your Tasks

Don't just say "Browse the site." Give them a mission.

  • Bad: "Look at the pricing page."
  • Good: "Imagine you are a small business owner with 5 employees. Find the plan that is best for you and proceed to checkout."

Step 2: Set the Scenario

Give them context before they start. "You are planning a birthday party for your 10-year-old son. You are looking for a venue that provides food and entertainment."

This helps the user get into the right mindset.

Step 3: Run the Pilot

Always run 1 test session first. You will almost certainly find that one of your tasks is confusingly worded. Fix the task instructions before launching to the other 9 participants.

Step 4: Analyze with AI

Traditionally, you would have to watch 10 hours of video to find the insights.

With Feedbackerr:

  1. The AI transcribes every word.
  2. It tracks click paths (coming soon).
  3. It generates a summary: "3 out of 5 users failed to find the 'Add to Cart' button because it was below the fold."

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Leading the Witness: Don't say "Click the green button." Say "Proceed to the next step."
  • Testing Too Much: Keep sessions under 15-20 minutes. Users get tired.
  • Ignoring the "Why": If a user struggles, don't just note the error. Listen to what they are saying. Are they confused by the jargon? Did they expect the button to be elsewhere?
